I found a very old leather bound book in a second hand bookstore right before Christmas about English place names and their origin. Every city, town or village name had a beautiful deeper meaning. When I finally found Mousehole it said the following: “Mousehole is simply named Mousehole because its harbour and streets are very, very small.” Ok. So maybe, not everything needs to be symbolic. But who needs that when they have over a 7000 Christmas lights aye?
Every year the village goes into Holiday mode with Christmas light decorations, enlightening the harbour, streets and mountain above. From the 1000-bulb and 6 meter high MERRY CHRISTMAS sign to the wrapped presents dangling around little boats. If you get a chance to visit this town somewhere between the 14th of December and the 4th of January make sure to take an evening stroll around town. The combination of old cottages, pubs and colored lights swaying in the wind will really get you in the Christmas mood. Today it’s only 333 days till the next switch on. Don’t miss it!
