I’m not the biggest camping fan but staying in a tent in the middle of the Himalayas, far from a living soul or village did appeal to me. And so we spend the night in Sarchu, first stop on the road from Manali to Leh. In a tented camp (the village named Sarchu consists of this tented camp alone). We had dal and naan for dinner in the main tent at night, a luke warm bucket bath in the morning followed by dal and naan for breakfast. Simple. The surprising thing is that even though you have no more than your travel companion, a good book (Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri) and the gigantic mountains around you, you never get bored. The air is clean, the sights majestic and the silence just perfect. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Sarchu is your sacred place. It sure is mine!
