On the highway from Manali to…wait. Did I say highway? Correction: on the rocky, steepy, sometimes partly missing road from Manali to Leh you will pass Baralachala. A high mountain pass that is roughly some 4900 meters high. Try running at this height and you will be out of breath within seconds. A legend states that this is where the daughter of the moon and the sun’s son fell in love. They had to run down the hill in different directions and meet in the same place to be allowed to marry. (some say marriage is a challenge, well try this and after that everything seems easy) No, we didn’t try the run down when we were there , but we did enjoy the view, the fresh air and the sounds of a thousand prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
If you’re looking for the most mazing drive ever, this is it! Hire a car and driver in Delhi and drive up to Leh. Take your time to prevent altitude sickness, or at least take enough aspirine and ORT! Also make sure to check the weather, most roads are closed during the winter because of the snow.
