Everybody has their own rituals. Mine is a refreshing shower in the morning to wake up. Clean, fresh water. In Varanasi, Indian people wash themselves in the river Ganges. Not to clean themselves, but because they believe that it’s a sacred place and that bathing in the Ganges remits sins. Young and old, male and female and even animals dip their bodies in this holy water. We took a boat early in the morning to watch the sun slowly bringing light to this fascinating town – and the empty river bank on the other side of the river. At the different ghats (the stairs and terraces leading to the river) of the old town you see cremation places, hundreds of people praying, yogi’s practicing their poses and a handful of backpackers trying to take it all in. If you want to see, feel and experience the real India, I think this is a good starting point!
