I told you about our fantastic jeep tour through Iceland yesterday. Well, the second day was even better and more beautiful! Together with Icelandic Mountain Guides and our amazing guide, Maxime (yes he’s French, and if you need to know: he fell in love with an Icelandic woman while mountaineering during a holiday, how romantic!) We drove through amazing scenery: pink skies, pink snowy mountains and steam everywhere. Quite a surreal view I can tell you! We drove to a gigantic glacier tongue – Sólheimajökull glacier – which we climbed wearing iron spikes. You can only proceed slowly because in between the ice are dangerous crevasses covered by snow in which one can easily fall down some 25 meters or more. The ice looks like gigantic sculptures formed by wind and erosion, is a bright turquoise blue and moves a few meters every year. We even walked through a tunnel formed by the ice with a light hole in the middle that gave an amazing soft glow bounced by the transparent shine of the ice. I always imagined the moon to look like this. After the glacier we visited a point where you can spot the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Yes, that’s the pain-in-the-ass-volcano that erupted in 2010 and kept us in Delhi for 8 more days than planned! But the most beautiful part of the tour was spotting the Northern Light. I’ve been wanting to see it all my life, not just because of the sights, but even more so because of the name – Aurora Borealis – and even though the weather conditions weren’t very promising we finally did see it! Yes!
