A perfect short hike near West Thumb Geyser Basin is the Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail. Even if you’ve spend over an hour at the Geyser Basin you will still have enough time to walk this 2,5 km hike. They call it Lake Overlook Trail, because you get a great view of the lake. We really liked the diversity of this short hike: you pass through a beautiful forest, fresh green meadows and climb a hill that’s not too steep (but still quite heavy when you have your 14 kilo-toddler on your back). The views from the highest point are amazing, but it gets even better when you spot an elk between the trees on your way down. Be careful though: when they’re protecting their offspring they might run straight at you, so either back away or keep your bear spray ready!
