We fell in love with Denver this summer. Last June we made a trip that was on our bucket list for a long time. We drove through the USA in a camper. And by camper I mean a –bigger-than-our-Amsterdam-living-room-RoadBearRV. We travelled from Denver to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain National Park and the golden triangle. More about that later, Let’s start with the city that stole our hearts: Denver.
This place is considered the gateway to outdoor life, but it is so much more than that. Especially LoDo (that’s how the locals call the hip Lower Downtown area.) Think: Soho mixed with Brooklyn. Lots of organic tearooms, farm-to-table restaurants, fashion boutiques, a huge outdoor store called REI and our favourite: the Pinterest-worthy Tattered Cover Bookstore. A huge, but cosy bookstore where you can spend hours browsing books and magazines or sip on a latte.
If you are looking for a hotel, The Crawford Hotel in Union Station is it. It’s built in the actual station building (no worries, the rooms are super isolated, so you won’t hear the trains). The lobby downstairs – with stylish bar, game-tables, flower shop and other boutiques – is the waiting area for train travellers as well. The hotel is filled with pieces of art, created from items they found in the attics while they were redecorating, like old timetables for example.
Another hit in this city and ideal of you’re traveling with kids: The zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This last one has a huge collection of dinosaur fossils, over a hundred animal dioramas and a fantastic exhibit on stones and minerals. But more on that later.
If you love shopping or can’t go home without gifts: hop in a cab to the Sixteenth Street Mall where you’ll find stores I love, but haven’t openend (yet) in The Netherlands (Anthropologie, Madewell. Free People to name a few).
Next stop on this USA road trip adventure: Yellowstone! But more about that next time…
