Wind, fresh air and beautiful scenery: that’s what you get when you cycle around Vlieland. Don’t be fooled by its size – Vlieland only has 25 km of cycling routes – but the wind and grassy dunes will turn any short trip into a heavy workout. Pick your date carefully if you like cycling solo. Summer, fall weekends and early spring are favorite times to visit and can make it quite busy on the road. Do like we did: pick a weekend right after summer holidays are over with a rainy forecast. A 90% guarantee for some good old peace and quiet.
A favorite route is the one from the village to the Posthuys, an old building where they used to gather the mail from and to the ships. On sunny days you can enjoy a typical Dutch pancake on the terrace. Along the way you can spot all kinds of birds (and boats that got stuck) when the tide is low – there’s even a bird hut just off the road close to the camping ground – or you can pick your own berries in the fields.
Take the path straight through the dunes and you will be amazed by the colors of the grass, the tiny dune lakes surrounded by purple flowers and bright orange roofs from some scattered houses near the coast. We have our minds set on this cute little cottage, overlooking the dunes and sea, a perfect place to write a book some day…
