Heartbreak hotel: Elvis on the Beach.
I am a huge Elvis fan. I love his voice and his songs and of course his iconic look. I was surprised to find out there’s this really cool beach restaurant on Terschelling called Heartbreak Hotel. We’ve visited the island quite a few times, but never visited this restaurant, until last time.
Well, since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell
Down at the end of Lonely Street at Heartbreak Hotel…
Location wise the name of the place is quite right, actually. It’s not really at the end of Lonely Street, but it is right at the end of a long and empty drive along the sea. We were driving for miles and miles and this was probably the first and the last place we saw. It’s quite a unique building, high on its poles painted in typical fifty diner shades like soft yellow, mint green and strawberry milkshake pink. Even the interior oozes that American 50’s diner feel. With retro leather booths, again in soft ice-cream pastels. Even the menu is very diner-like with milkshakes (warning: you won’t be hungry for a few days after this one!), hamburgers and home-made fries. There’s even a life-sized Elvis doll, which is great for pictures of course.
What a view.
Dinner is great here. even when it gets chilly at night, sitting in the glass extension of the restaurant makes you feel as if you’re outside. With great, wide open views of the beach and the sea. Never a dull moment here, because with the typical island weather the light and scenery changes every second. You might even be lucky enough to spot a swimming seal somewhere far away. (If not, but you really want to, book a seal watching tour, like this one. You’ll almost always spot a few seals sunbathing on one of the sandbanks.)
We drove here one night, had drinks on the terrace and dinner after. It’s perfect and it really feels as if you’re at the end of the world. Hopefully not heartbroken, but definitely enjoying good company, great views and fresh fish…all thanks to the rolling sea as Elvis would sing! (such a crazy, funny song!)
