It’s tradition in the Netherlands to take a dip in the sea on the morning of January 1st. Yep, you read that right; people dive in the North Sea with nothing more than their swimwear out of free will. It’s called Nieuwjaarsduik and it is so popular that it’s organized in 89 places along the coast! We visited the one in Zandvoort. Luckily the weather today was nice (8 degrees Celsius), but they even do it when it’s -6 with snow on the beach! Of course most of the people (like us) just stand, watch and support the ones who dive in. The national soup sponsor gives everybody an orange hat and pea soup afterwards to get back on temperature.
Happy New Year everyone and thanks for reading our travel blog every day! Keep following us in 2012, we have some nice trips planned for the upcoming weeks!
