A few months ago we were lucky enough to travel to Scotland. This country had been on our wish list for a long time. It’s got that perfect mix of beautiful nature and amazing cultural sights. Plus: when you see a romcom (and I see a lot of those, Maarten not so much) chances are high Scotland is one of the main characters. Like that movie Maid of Honour, where Patrick Dempsey follows his best friend all the way to Scotland from New York to stop her from marrying a very rich duke. This duke lives in a gigantic, beautiful castle called Eilean Donan Castle and we were lucky enough to visit it on our very first day. (oh, and don’t worry guys…Highlander and the Bond movie The World is not Enough are also set here).
Eilean Donan Castle is really fairy-tale perfect, because it’s set on an island and has a very characteristic stone bridge leading up to the building. It’s surrounded by a lake and forests and on clear days, you can even see the island Skye in the background. On a typical Scottish weather day, you’ll probably spot it at its best: enfolded in mysterious mist.
As with most beautiful things the drive to get there is just as great. to be honest, in Scotland, wherever you’re driving the scenery is breathtaking. You’ll pass mountains, lakes and beautiful woods filled with bluebells. But more about that later…
P.S. Check Visit Scotland if you’re planning a trip for ideas, inspiration and information.
