Our trek in Darjeeling went from Tumling to Sandakphu. A beautiful road that started out hilly with green fields, blue wooden houses and gigantic magnolia trees, but ended in the steepest roads we ever trekked on. For the first night we stayed in Shikar Lodge where an in-room fire kept us warm. Well, at least until the smoke got so thick we had to open the door and windows, got extremely cold, wore all our clothes and slept for 3 hours. We arrived in the dark the night before in heavy rains, so it was a big surprise to wake up with a bit of sun and see the beautiful scenery outside the lodge: prayer flags on the mountain, green peaks and horses grazing the fields. It was hard to imagine that 18 hours later we would be walking through the snow…more about that tomorrow!
